Next Iteration Theater Company presents the Intercultural Play Reading Series, directed by dianne k. webb
Over one weekend of staged readings at the MATCH performance space in Midtown, with post-show talk-backs, we present to you Pulitzer Prize-winning, Tony-nominated AYAD AKHTAR; the poignant, timely and haunting award-winning work of AISHAH RAHMAN, and introduce playwright and Houston native, RHETT MARTINEZ.
The Schedule:
Friday May 13, 8 pm – The Mojo and the Sayso by Aishah Rahman
Poignant and as relevant today as when award-winning playwright AISHAH RAHMAN wrote it in 1989, “The Mojo and the Sayso” is inspired by events in 1971. In this deeply honest drama, a family contends with the violent death of a young son as they navigate religion, militancy and the fantasy of escape in their individual paths through grief. Saturday May 14, 4 pm – Three on a Match by Rhett Martinez
With tongue-in-cheek, Rhett Martinez delivers a satirical look at the consequences of U.S. and UN military intervention in the unsettling world of a volatile Latin-American country. Under the control of a corrupt dictatorship, a displaced Queen, a Haberdasher and a mute Bellhop try to maintain a facade of normalcy in a once grand hotel–until an American intervenes. Saturday May 14, 8 pm – The Who and The What by Ayad Akhtar
Pultizer-winning, Tony-nominated playwright, AYAD AKHTAR’s work is a hot knife through butter. In “The Who and the What,” he gets to the deepest questions about identity as a Pakistani father and his two American-born daughters grapple with an inter-generational culture clash over the power that stories wield and who controls how they are told. All play readings will have ASL Interpreters and Assistive Listening Devices for our deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members.
