<strong>New Life Deaf Recovery</strong>: A faith based 12-step program specifically designed for culturally Deaf who struggle with addiction. New Life Deaf Recovery focuses on making real life changes through the power of God, based on Biblical principles. Wednesday at 6:30pm and Saturday at 4pm.<span id="more-15697"></span></p>
<p><strong>Friday Night Movie</strong>: We will be showing powerful entertaining movies on 3rd Fridays of month at 6:30pm. Snacks, drink, and supper will be served! After each movie, you can stay and chat or discuss the movie.</p>
<p><strong>Computer Training</strong>: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00am till 12:00 noon and Tuesday evenings at 7pm. You will learn the basics of computer and have great fun doing it.</p>
<p><strong> Life Management Skills Training</strong>: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00am till 12noon. You will learn successful life management skill, decision-making, and goal setting for fulfilled and happy life.</p>
<p><strong>English and Math Classes</strong>: (GED Preparation or non-GED) Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1pm to 2:30pm and on Saturday from 2 to 4pm. Learn the basics of English and Math to help you prepare to take the GED exam or just come to refresh your knowledge.</p>
<p><strong>Sign Language Training</strong>: We offer classes to those who want to learn ASL or even to refresh your ASL knowledge every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00am till 12:00 noon and every Tuesday evening at 6:30pm till 8:30pm. The evening fee is $50. There are two evening ASL courses: Beginning ASL and Intermediate ASL.</p>
<p><strong>Deaf Self Advocacy Training</strong>: You can learn to become effective self-advocacy. Every Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8pm</p>
<p><strong class="ltbrown">Workshops/Services</strong><br />
<strong>International Deaf Services</strong>: International deaf people come to LBDCC to learn American Sign Language, meet/fellowship with other deaf, and get assistance with independent living skills. You can meet with them and learn about their cultures! Can meet every Saturdays and some Tuesdays and Thursdays.</p>
<p><strong>Housing Workshop</strong>: You can learn how to gather information, and understand the process of finding your new home (apartment, house, etc). Thursday, February 17 at 1pm.</p>
<p><strong>Counseling</strong>: Offered by appointment only. Please call the Woodhaven office by voice 713-467-3325 or VP 832-431-3880</p>
<p><strong>Food and Clothing Services</strong>: Food and clothes provided to the deaf community as needed. Service open Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 10:00am and Sunday after the morning worship service (12:00 noon)</p>
<p><strong>Computer Repair</strong>: Hafiz Martowidjojo will provide services to those who need it. Contact him at 281-249-5282 (VP) or 832-724-3716 (text) or <a href="mailto: jerseyhouston@aol.com">jerseyhouston@aol.com</a> for appointments.</p>
<p><strong>How to Set Up Your Business</strong>. A Guide to the Different Business Types and How to Decide Which One is Best for You Workshop: This workshop is to prepare you with business/organization set-up, etc. There is also important information about property tax. Workshop is on April 7th at 1pm.</p>
<p><strong>Deaf Immersion Night</strong>: Friday, TBA at 7pm. Interpreting students and hearing people can gain insights about Deaf culture, communications, barriers, etc.</p>
<p><strong>Monthly Workshop</strong>: Presented by Jana Bielfeldt on different important issues facing the Deaf community. Contact Jana at <a href="mailto: deafnessrs6b@drs.state.tx.us">deafnessrs6b@drs.state.tx.us</a> or 832-431-3844 for more detailed information. The dates are March 26, April 30, May 21, and June 11. All workshops start at 1pm.</p>

Participants will learn about establishing rates, policies, customer service and more.”<span id="more-14733"></span></p>
<p>Scripts – Ever wished you had a “Book of Scripts” for those sticky interpreting situations? This workshop will guide you in developing a “book of scripts” for practicing diplomacy and excellent customer service in general business practice as well as sticky and surprising ethical situations.</p>
<p>Presented by Cindy Barnett, these workshops carry a combined total of 0.7 CEUs and a wealth of very useful information for all interpreters.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The American Red Cross in partnership with the Hearing Loss Association of Houston and Texas Arrhythmia Institute is holding an Adult CPR/AED (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation / Automated external defibrillator) class for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing on Saturday, April 24th from 8am to 12:30pm.  <span id="more-14671"></span></p>
<p>There will be interpreters there who are volunteering their time.  The class will be at Red Cross Chapter Headquarters at 2700 Southwest Freeway, Houston, Texas 77098.  It&#8217;s just south of Kirby on I-59.</p>
<p>Interpreter interns will also be present to help with registration and skill practice and demonstration.</p>

&#8220;Hey, this doctor refused to provide me an interpreter simple because I can read and write. This is serious medical appointment. I need an interpreter. What do I need to do?&#8221;<br />
&#8220;doctor say bring my mom or family help interpret&#8221;<br />
&#8220;got email from employer say I have job interview. he not know I am deaf. Do do&#8221;<br />
&#8220;what does essential functions mean for the job with or w/o reasonable accommodations?<span id="more-14455"></span></p>

As I give presentation, each topic will into fun, interactive and challenge for the deaf, hoh and hearing individuals. Activities will be offered such as TV Style quizzes, multiple choices lists, role play activities, group discussions, break down into group activities. and last, provide handouts to take home as well. My goal not to bored the consumers but to motivate and empower the consumers becoming self advocate and understand their rights.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Houston Center for Independent Living is hosting a <a href="http://www.cessi.net/ttw/MarketingMaterials/WISE_flyer.pdf" rel="external">Work Incentives Seminar Event &#8211; WISE (pdf)</a> in Houston on <b>October 14, 2009</b>. It will be held at the <b>Metropolitan Multi-Service Center at 1475 W. Gray from 9-11 AM</b>. The purpose of this event is provide information to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries about exploring their work options.<span id="more-13445"></span></p>
<p>Many receiving Social Security benefits are interested in returning to or going to work for the first time but are not sure about how to get started.  The WISE Event provides answers. In addition, we will have Employment Networks available who will explain how their services make going to work easier for them. Houston Center for Independent Living is committed to providing assistance to our beneficiaries as they become self-sufficient.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We in the Deaf CERT team needs to have CERT certification ASAP and the Houston Community College’s policy that ANY classes MUST have at least 30 student and if it’s doesn’t meet that goal, they will close the class and We can NOT go on with our Deaf CERT team training to the Deaf community. We are planning to attend the CERT training at HCC Central campus (Old San Jac) in midtown Houston starting Sept 23rd every Wednesday from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.<span id="more-13321"></span></p>
<p>Marni Rosen, HCC’s CERT Coordinator, said that there are 11 students registered for that class as today (Sept 10th). Yes, we need at least 19!! There will be interpreters. If you are interested, please contact Marni Rosen at HCCS at this contact info below.</p>
