The Committee structures its work into ten broad issue areas. They are Access, Communication, Education, Emergency Management, Health, Housing, Recreation and the Arts, Transportation, Veterans and Workforce.

The Committee wants to hear from its citizens with disabilities, family members, caregivers and professionals in the field of disability issues. We want to know what YOU think are the major needs and issues facing Texans with disabilities. Your feedback is needed and welcomed.

If you have any data that you want to include with your comments that helps bolster your feedback, please do include it or a link to it with your survey comments. The survey will be posted until September 30, 2010. The information will then be consolidated and considered as the Committee drafts its biennial policy recommendations for the 82nd Legislative Session which begins in January 2011.

This survey is anonymous. Please distribute widely to your community. Thank you for your participation in this important survey. YOUR OPINION Matters!

Wanted: Qualified Interpreters who are willing and able to donate some time to a good cause. Please see the email below my signature, and the attached flier about two Hurricane Recovery events that have been specifically planned to reach out to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. The two events are scheduled for Friday afternoons & evenings and Saturdays, March 19 – 20 (at Woodhaven Baptist Deaf Church in Houston) and March 26-27 (at the Baytown Community Center).

The agencies sponsoring this event have arranged for several certified interpreters to be present, but no one is sure how great the need will be for interpreters on the days of these events. There will be an exhibit area with vendors and exhibitors where they would like to have plenty of qualified interpreters assisting with communication and providing a welcoming environment to individuals that arrive at the event.

If you are willing and able to donate some time interpreting at either of the events listed on the attached flier, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. If you plan to attend, or would like more information, please contact Yesenia Castillo, Outreach Coordinator of Neighborhood Centers, Inc. at ycastillo@neighborhood-centers.org, 713-491-6154 X 340 or 713-806-9647.

Neighborhood Centers will gladly acknowledge your “in kind donation” of your time and services with a letter verifying the hours of your participation.

Neighborhood Centers Inc.’s Stay Connected Texas program will host two Ike Recovery Fairs for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired community (see attachment). If you still have ongoing needs caused by Hurricane Ike and live in Harris County, Neighborhood Centers Inc. may be able to assist you. NCI’s program provides disaster case management which helps families and individuals develop a plan for recovery and achieve pre-disaster levels of stability.

Ongoing needs for which assistance may be available include:
* Home Repair (roof, siding, sheetrock, etc.)
* Mental health assistance (counseling, support groups)
* Furniture (bed, sofa, lamps, dining room set)
* Appliances (stove, refrigerator, washer/dryer)
* Job related expenses (Job loss, training, tools, etc.)
* Disconnect utilities notices

*If you have any of the needs listed above, we may be able to assist you.

Also, exhibitors/vendors scheduled to be present at the event include:
* Deaf Link
* DARS
* WIC
* Emergency Management
* Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority of Harris (Houston, TX) County (MHMRA)

Attendees will be able to fill out all initial Neighborhood Centers Inc. paperwork and register for services on the day of the event.

Houston Quarterly General Meeting. A special combined meeting will be held this month for all Workgroups and General meeting members. The goal is to share information on Workgroup activities, discuss issues, and decide Deaf Task Force business this Saturday, Jan 23rd, 2010.

Date: Saturday, January 23, 2010
Time: 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM

Place:
Woodhaven Deaf Baptist Church
9920 Long Point Rd
Houston, Texas 77055

Agenda:
10:00 AM
General meeting – This is a general monthly meeting of all Deaf Task Force Members. The purpose is to share information on Workgroup activities, discuss issues, and decide Deaf Task Force business.

11:00 AM to 11:15 AM
Break Between Sessions

11: 15 AM to 12:30 PM
Workgroup Sessions in Different Areas of the Church

* Deaf Survey Workgroup – The purpose of the Survey Workgroup is to develop a written and ASL interview survey form which will be used within the 13-county regional area to determine how big the Deaf Community is, what is the primary means of communication, and what are the emergency preparedness needs.

* Deaf Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Workgroup – The purpose of the CERT workgroup is to create a Deaf version of the national Community Emergency Response Team training, to recruit and form a regional Deaf CERT Team, to train Deaf Community Members on Emergency Preparedness and to train Hearing Community first responders (fire, police, emergency workers) on how to work with a Deaf CERT Team. A traditional CERT team helps the community, especially their neighborhoods, by checking onneighbors, helping to clear debris, help in to deliver aid/food/water, and assisting as volunteers before and after disasters.

* Deaf point-of-Distribution (POD) Workgroup – The purpose of the POD Workgroup is to develop a POD plan and worker team for the Woodhaven church site. This group will also be developing Deaf materials for training other Deaf worker teams for other locations. A traditional POD helps the neighborhood by distributing ice, water, meals, and tarps for roofs. The Deaf POD will do same for the Deaf Community and may also have additional service available such as emergency agency help.

12:30 PM Lunch and Networking at Woodhaven
