The Center for Hearing and Speech has recently established a unique Educational Liaison program called SoundWaves. The SoundWaves Program works on behalf of children with hearing loss to help coordinate and facilitate the goal of spoken language development between our service providers and area professionals. CHS’ SoundWaves program provides local conferences for audiologists, speech/language pathologists, early childhood intervention specialists, itinerant teachers and deaf educators who have hearing impaired children on their caseload. These conferences teach the specialists about hearing loss, advancements in technology, how to “troubleshoot” functional problems with hearing aids and cochlear implants, as well as how to maximize hearing and learning for a child with hearing impairment.

Some public and private schools in the United States have had little direct experience with students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. When a school is unfamiliar with hearing loss, hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices commonly used by these students, it can be difficult to anticipate the students’ unique needs, both academically and socially. Our Educational Liaison will provide support and training to school professionals, parents and students through a variety of personalized services which incorporate specific strategies to enhance each student’s communication and academic success.

Position Requirements and Duties
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with Teacher Certification in Deaf Education

    – Reports to the Director of Audiology
– Attends Audiology support staff meetings
– Collaborates and educates parents about the ARD process
– Reviews IEP goals with the family and school district
– Provides in-service trainings on device troubleshooting: hearing aids, FM systems, and cochlear implants
– Documents activities and collects detailed data for grant reporting
– Comfortable with public speaking

A previous knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point and social media tools is required.
