Houston Softball Teams Fares Well in Regionals

Houston was well represented at the Southwest Softball Association for the Deaf softball tournament in Gulfport, Mississippi. Houston sent three teams to Gulfport with hopes of winning the tournament. This tournament was the first ever tournament where two regions merged into one tournament so the tournament included teams from the Southeast Softball Association for the Deaf as well.

The teams – Houston Heat (coached by Amy Mata), Houston Thunderz (coached by Calvin Kermit), and Houston Xtremes (coached by Billy Koch). The Houston Heat fared quite well for their second year in existence – they finished the tournament 1-3 with an exciting win over Corpus Christi. The Thunderz finished the tournament 1-2 with also an exciting win over Corpus Christi.

The Houston Xtremes an underdog, in the tournament expecting to finish 3rd behind the favorites – Austin Toons (last year’s reigning Champion), and the SouthernBoyz. The Xtremes played a hard tournament playing three potential Top 6 teams in the Nation (Carolina, Toons, and SouthernBoyz) and fared quite well. The Xtremes finished 2nd in the regionals for the 2nd straight year and retained their fight to finish in the Championship game. Granted they finished short of their goal of finishing as the Regional Champions – but they took all the right steps of moving forward and keep moving up.

Zachary Reagan (Xtremes) and Justin Ashton (Xtremes) were named 1st Team All Stars

Terrell Brittian (Xtremes) and Eric Garrison (Thunderz) and Bernard Latchley (Thunderz) was named 2nd team All Star

Billy Koch (Xtremes) was named Manager of the Tourney

So now the Xtremes next stop is to head to Portland, Oregon for the National Softball Association for the Deaf Tournament on August 5 -8, 2010. But we are looking for donations and contribution from the community to help us get there. We need to raise about $3,000 to go to Portland so far we have raised $1,000 and need to raise $2,000 more. 2010 South East Texas Deaf Golf Association – 3rd Annual Scramble

This tournament will benefit SETdga as well as the junior golf programs. This tournament is open to Deaf/deaf/hearing people. We are using 3-men teams and the best ball scramble format. The more 3-men teams we have, the better.

We are here to announce a 2-men tourney that will be hosted at Oakhurst on October 24th. There will be random teams/pairings based on 2 groups–low scoring averages and high scoring averages. We will use the alternate shot format. There are rules below to give you a better idea. I hope to see more players participating in this tournament, and we believe that it will be interesting (and more challenging).

UPDATE-SW Flag Football for the Deaf-Oct 24th

There will be a 2nd annual SouthWest Flag Football for the Deaf Tournament at Houston Sportsplex Complex. SWFFD will have 4 Men’s 8×8 teams, 4 Men’s 4×4 teams, and 2 Women’s 4×4 teams. After tournament, free scrimmage for Women’s 8×8, but you must sign waiver or you will not play. It has grown since last year!

8:00 am – Coach’s Meeting @ Sportsplex Concession
9:00 am – Men’s 4×4 Tournament (double elminated bracket)
11:00 am – Women’s 4×4 Tournament (2 out of 3 series)
2:00 pm – Men’s 8×8 Tournament (double elminated bracket)

SWFFD General Meeting will be held after SWFFD Tournament at TBA Location. To make plans for future SWFFD including new officers and bylaws, etc.

DON’T FORGET $10 fan and players fee ($5 goes to SWFFD, $5 goes to Sportsplex Admission fees)

Houston Xtremes Men’s Softball team will be hosting a BBQ fundraiser at Meyerland Park on June 6th. From 1:00 p.m. to ?? Combo BBQ Plate can be purchased for $5.00 a plate

This event is a fund raiser to help the Houston Xtremes travel to Southwest Deaf Softball Association Regional Tournament in Oklahoma in July. And for the National Tournament in August to Florida. So come and support your local deaf men’s softball team. If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute you can do so by contacting us at coach@houstonxtremessoftball.com
